Indian school Ibri witnessed Onam celebrations on the 10th of September, 2019.The celebrations started with setting up of an attractive floral decoration (pookalam) in the school entrance that was reminiscent of the agrarian past of kerala which turned out to be attractive and mesmerizing. The morning assembly began with a prayer song followed by a welcome speech by Sophia of class IX. The cultural programmes included the welcoming of Mahabali in traditional style. Students performed thiruvathirakali, a graceful dance which is traditionally performed by women. Onam awareness speech was given by Ms. Sindoora from the teaching faculty. Next, the principal, Mr. V.S. Suresh, conveyed his onam wishes to everyone. During his speech, he exhorted the students to inculcate good values and virtues which would take them to greater heights. The programme on that day was a rocking ensemble of Onam songs, Dances (Onakali), Vallamkali, etc., “Just as sweetness cannot be separated from honey, just as beauty cannot be separated from a rainbow, Onam cannot be separated from a Malayali’s heart,” The highlight of the festival was the inter house flower carpet competition (Atha Pookalam). The four houses adorned the pookalam carpet with beautiful flowers. Impressive designs and artistic creativity were the hallmarks of the pookalam. The first place was bagged by Yellow House, the second place by Green House and the third place was shared by Red and Blue Houses respectively. Atul Tom Mathew, of class X ‘A’ proposed the vote of thanks. The entire programme was compered by Mr. Sajimon, Dept of Maths.
